The casino
An hour south of Munich on the west shore of the Tegernsee, Spielbank Bad Wiessee opened in 1957. It was Bavaria’s highest-earning casino in 2023, with 158,000 visitors.
Its building at Winner 1, opened in 2005, has a copper façade and panoramic glazing that make the lake and mountains the backdrop for the tables.
The classic rooms hold around a dozen roulette and blackjack tables in the French and American styles, with poker at weekends. A separate 800-square-metre hall carries roughly 220 slot machines from midday. Bavarian law sets the playing age at 21, and a jacket is expected of gentlemen at the tables. The casino also stages open-air concerts and the finals of the Bavarian poker championship.
The hotel
Across the lake in Rottach-Egern, the Althoff Seehotel Überfahrt is one of only six hotels in Germany with three Michelin Keys, held for the third consecutive year in 2026. All 174 rooms and suites have a balcony or terrace.
In August 2026 it opened the 3,000-square-metre 4 elements spa, with a 28-metre indoor pool, one of the longest in any German hotel, a heated 17-metre outdoor pool, three saunas, a steam bath, a Pilates studio and 24-hour fitness.
The casino is about six kilometres around the lake, a short taxi ride, and the hotel quotes the drive from Munich at 45 minutes.
Eating and drinking
Restaurant Überfahrt, under chef Cornelia Fischer, holds a Michelin star in the 2026 guide and serves Wednesday to Saturday evenings. Il Barcaiolo cooks Italian, the Egerner Bucht and the Bayernstube handle Bavarian classics, Fährhütte 14 sits on the water, and the new Überfahrer Bar opened with the spa.
The casino has its own bistro and bars beside the gaming rooms.
The setting
The Tegernsee lies 725 metres up, with the Wallberg rising to 1,722 metres above Rottach-Egern. The stay here is alpine rather than urban: a swim in the lake, the cable car up the Wallberg, dinner by the water and then the lights of the casino on the far shore.
